You may be aware that South Dallas was an original hub of Jewish life in Dallas as early as 1858, when German-Jewish immigrants settled south of downtown. The area was once bustling with kosher delis, Jewish businesses and four prominent synagogues. In the second half of the 19th century, Jewish life moved north, and South Dallas evolved.
The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation and the Dallas Jewish Historical Society are excited to share an opportunity to learn about two unique revitalization efforts happening in South Dallas.
Forest Forward
Forest Forward is based in South Dallas and focuses on community revitalization using the Purpose-Built Communities model in the targeted zip code 75215, with the historic Forest Theater as the anchor. Forest Forward leads holistic revitalization initiatives that aim to improve equity and opportunity in neighborhoods that have faced long-term, historic disinvestment. Drawing from community voices, Forest Forward’s work goes beyond the restoration of the Forest Theater to serve as a catalyst to spur equitable development. Focused on economic development, housing, and education.
Fair Park First
Fair Park, a 137-year-old, National Historic Landmark that is revitalizing, reactivating, and renewing. With nearly 277-acres it is filled with the most iconic Art Deco buildings and art in our nation. There are many components to Fair Park, but the first part of revitalization starts with the long-awaited Community Park. The 18-acre park will be designed to be the front porch of the surrounding community by providing easily accessible nature and usable outdoor recreation spaces with year-round programming. This campaign will also serve as a positive transformative point in our history. This is an opportunity to give this space back to the community. The Community Park will include requested amenities from the surrounding residents such as WiFi, spacious green belts with fountains, splash parks, performance areas, natural Texas landscapes, and more.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are pleased to invite you to join this Bus Tour of South Dallas to see the change currently underway.
You will NOT want to miss this historic, informative, and eye-opening tour. RSVP today! Seats are available on a limited and first come, first served basis.
