The 2018 Annual College Scholarship Reception
The Dallas Jewish Community Foundation and its affiliate the Southwest Community Foundation hosted its 27th Annual Scholarship Reception on Thursday, May 24th. In partnership with unwavering scholarship funders, the Foundation and their Scholarship Committee awarded nearly $150,000 in scholarships to deserving college students. The night brought together scholarship funders, committee members, scholarship recipients and their families.
Mona Allen, Director of Programs and Scholarships, said “The Scholarship Committee tasked with selecting the deserving applicants were given applications with simply a number and no identifiable information.” The DJCF has implemented this anonymous selection process for a number of years as an intentional effort to ensure the very best candidate is selected based on their merits.
Scholarship recipients ranged from 4th year medical school students to freshman music students with a variety of college experience, backgrounds, faiths, and expertise in the recipient collective. The majority of the scholarships awarded were based on financial need, academic merit, extracurricular involvement, and/or community service.
Recipient of the Dorothy and Lewis Suckle Scholarship of the DJCF, Zachary Denn said, “Education is critical to my future. I firmly believe that the foundation for success is held by a strong education and thus I am immeasurably thankful to the Jewish Community in providing me with this tremendously generous scholarship as it will set me on my path for life.”
Since 1991, the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation and the Southwest Community Foundation has awarded over $2 million in scholarships, helping over 700 students attain college degrees.
Please contact the Foundation office if you are interested in setting up your own scholarship fund. We would be happy to work with you!
